Assmannshausen

Although now officially a district of Rüdesheim, the delightful Assmannshausen was originally an entirely separate village. Situated on a curve in the beautifully scenic Rhine Valley, the village is surrounded by a backdrop of terraced vineyards, in which some of Germany's most popular red wines are produced. The village boasts a remarkably well-preserved centre, crammed with timber-framed houses and crooked narrow streets - ensuring Assmannshausen retains a reputation as a fantastic tourist attraction. One of Assmannshausen's best-known sights is the quirky Painted House. Here windows, doors and people have been painted very realistically on a flat wall - fooling a number of passers-by with its startling detail.

“It is a very interesting historical part of Germany to visit, which hour planned visit made the most of. The friendliness of the group was encouraged by the relaxed manner of the tour leader and his ability to be concerned with individuals interests. He dealt excellently with the sudden rail and boat cancellations which occurred, some due to the weather conditions, keeping us informed, even making them seem fun and organising alternative arrangements. A very enjoyable railway holiday.
