Read moreLocated just across the border from France in the easternmost point of Spain, Figueres is a Catalan city which, when translated literally, means "Fig Tree" in the local Catalan language (a language spoken mainly only by older Catalans - it was banned under Franco's rule).
The city has an attractive, compact Old Town as well as some beautiful buildings and interesting museums. Its most famous attraction is the Salvador Dali Theatre Museum, dedicated to the work of the city's favourite son. The museum is housed in an old theatre which Dali himself bought and converted, having already achieved international acclaim for his work.
The Castle of San Ferran in Figueres is recognised as the largest castle in Europe and has had a chequered history. It has served as a prison, was occupied by Napoleon and was the last remaining outpost of Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Franco bombed the town and castle as he narrowed in on victory.
