Classic Swiss Alps and the Jungfrau Express
4/Jul
Richard Jonas
5 stars
“Guide was first class, his knowledge and attention to detail beyond any I have ever met before. A team of 30 was too many, 25 plenty. I would not book a tour again unless for 25 people or less. The itinerary was good and varied. Eating in the hotel as a group is fine but as a buffet style was very uncomfortable. Either smaller tables or service at table. We were lucky with an excellent room, others were not so lucky, one room only had a small skylight.

“This was a wonderful 5 Star holiday with Great Rail Journeys Our Guide Stewart Houghton gave great help and advice on the two free days during this wonderful trip going up three mountains by rail or cable car. The journey to the top of the Jungfrau and the Ice palace was the highlight. but with two lake sailings one in a paddle steamer made this holiday one to remember Travelling with the small group we all became friends from all over the country I would recommend this holiday. “Amazing train journeys in beautiful Switzerland. Our guide Debs was the BEST and she made our trip very special. Only negative was long walks with cases and steep steps getting on and off trains, but the Swiss scenery made up for that!

“This was a fantastic holiday, with a brilliant tour manager (and some great fellow travellers!), in spite of the indifferent weather which ranged from hot and sunny to cool and stormy (and that was just on one day!). We have not given five stars because the expected stay in "glitzy" Montreux was changed to a stay in perfectly pleasant Lausanne, resulting in more time spent "commuting" to the outings and less time enjoying the "glitz", partially offset by the lovely hotel in Lausanne (although the commute did mean we never got to use the swimming pool as planned). The day trip to Chamonix on the Mont Blanc Express was great, and interesting from a railway perspective as well as a scenery point of view. The ride on the Golden Pass Express itself was superb, with a very pleasant light meal and sparkling wine while watching the mountains and meadows (and vineyards) go by. We enjoyed the hotel in Interlaken very much, but we did pay extra for a better room and having listened to other guests have decided that in future when an upgrade is offered we shall take it. Our room had a fantastic view over the town to the Jungfrau along the Lutschine valley, and there were plenty of electrical outlets and USB sockets to charge our various devices. The top floor restaurant on this, the tallest building in Interlaken, gave an even more wonderful view of the surrounding scenery, and the hotel was well located for the shops and for Interlaken West station where we arrived and departed with our luggage, while not being too far from Interlaken Ost station for the day trips. We were given free bus passes by the hotel and could use those for local travel if walking was too far. We thoroughly enjoyed the day trip to Thun, and overall thought that there was an excellent balance between arranged tours and free time (plus the ability to opt out of the arranged tours, of course), and between included meals and the opportunity to eat out on our own. A really great holiday. Our only criticism, other than the change of city for the first three days, is that after a late morning start for the journey home we had rather a late arrival in London, too late for a train all the way home. We couldn't help thinking it might not have been difficult to leave two hours earlier so that trains out of London would have been more plentiful when we arrived there. Nothing too serious, we coped with it, but that would have been better.

Switzerland is known for its world-class resorts that captivate visitors year-round. Nestled amid the Swiss Alps, resorts like Zermatt, Interlaken and St. Moritz host breathtaking mountain views, providing a haven for skiing enthusiasts in winter and hiking aficionados during the warmer months. The luxurious amenities, impeccable service, and Swiss hospitality make these resorts an ideal escape, combining outdoor adventure with refined relaxation in a truly enchanting alpine setting.

Majestic mountains

The country's striking mountainous landscape is like no other, with the Swiss Alps dominating its skyline. Renowned for their breathtaking beauty, these peaks, including iconic ones like the Matterhorn and Jungfraujoch, attract outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The Swiss Alps are also surrounded by pristine lakes and charming alpine villages. The well-preserved natural beauty and stunning vistas make Switzerland a haven for those seeking serenity in its mountainous embrace.

Alpine lakes

The calm waters of Switzerland's lakes such as Geneva, Lucerne, and Zurich beautifully mirror the majestic mountains that surround them. Each lake has its own distinct charm, providing chances for boating, swimming, and leisurely walks along the shores. Besides their visual appeal, the crystal-clear waters also play a crucial role as reservoirs for hydroelectric power, aligning with Switzerland's dedication to sustainability and environmental awareness.

Swiss cuisine

Switzerland's cuisine is a delightful blend of Alpine flavours, influenced by French, German, and Italian culinary traditions. Fondue and raclette, both cheese-centric dishes, represent the essence of Swiss food. You'll also find hearty dishes like Rösti, a potato dish, and Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, featuring sliced veal in a creamy mushroom sauce. And, of course, Swiss chocolate is a standout, crafted by renowned chocolatiers who produce world-renowned treats.

Switzerland's iconic railways

Switzerland is celebrated for its efficient and picturesque railway system, with several iconic routes offering unforgettable journeys. The Glacier Express, a legendary panoramic train ride, seamlessly connects Zermatt and St. Moritz, traversing the majestic Alps and crossing 291 bridges and 91 tunnels. Meanwhile, the Jungfrau Express transports passengers to the awe-inspiring Jungfraujoch, known as the 'Top of Europe,' where breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks await.

For those seeking a more leisurely experience, the GoldenPass Line weaves its way through charming Swiss villages, linking Montreux to Lucerne and treating passengers to a visual feast of diverse landscapes. The Bernina Express, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage route, navigates the scenic Alps and traverses the remarkable Landwasser Viaduct.

Switzerland's railway network not only showcases impressive engineering but also combines it with breathtaking scenery, ensuring that each journey becomes a truly memorable experience.
