For Your Wellbeing and Safety on Holiday

We want your holiday to be as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Because local safety standards, in the countries that you'll be visiting, may differ to those that you're familiar with at home, we've put together this helpful guide. These include things to consider before departure, about staying safe on tour and feeling your best while you're away. With a little preparation and some simple tips, you can focus on having a great time and making wonderful memories.

Travel insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is a must. For comprehensive protection, it's recommended to arrange your policy at the time of booking your holiday. Ensure it covers medical emergencies, cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and includes repatriation for unexpected returns home.

Make sure your policy offers sufficient coverage for any activities you plan to enjoy during your holiday, such as dog-sledding, snorkeling, or other excursions. Since many standard insurance policies may not include these, it's important to review the details and upgrade your coverage if needed.

Don't forget to ensure your personal belongings are covered. Take a printed copy of your insurance certificate with you.

Passport, Visas and ID

Don't forget to check your passport's expiry date and ensure it meets the entry requirements of your destination. Many countries require at least six months of validity from your return date. Use our visa checker tool to verify visa requirements and processing times for your destination.

Some destinations may require you to carry ID on you at all times. While this may not be legally enforced everywhere, it's a good idea to do so.

Personal Medication

If you take regular medication, ensure you have enough for the duration of your trip and some extra, just in case of delays. Carry your medication, in its original packaging, in your hand luggage and keep a copy of your prescription with you. It's also a good idea to have a letter from your GP detailing any medical conditions.

It's also recommended that you include the following items in your personal first-aid kit:

  • Anti-diarrhoea medication
  • Indigestion tablets
  • General antiseptic cream
  • Painkillers
  • Insect repellent (if appropriate)
  • Sun cream (if appropriate)

Vaccinations and travel health advice

Depending on your destination, you might need vaccinations or preventative treatments. Visit the NHS Fit for Travel website for the latest guidance and speak to your GP before you travel. Remember to take proof of any vaccinations with you.

You can also find some helpful information at  Travel vaccination advice - NHS, NaTHNaC - Country List and  NaTHNaC - Medicines and travel.

Transport

Always wear a seatbelt where they are available, whether in taxis, coaches, or other vehicles.

Emergency contacts

Keep a list of personal emergency contact numbers and your travel insurer's helpline. Save these on your phone and also have a printed copy. Here's the government website to find the British representative for your destination: Find a British embassy, high commission or consulate - GOV.UK

Personal Belongings

Safeguard your personal belongings at all times, including luggage, cameras, wallets, mobile phones and other valuables. In your accommodation, use the safe provided to store valuables.

When handling luggage, avoid using escalators and, if they're available, use lifts instead. If using an escalator, place your suitcase on the step above or below you, ensuring it is secure and keeping one hand on the handrail.

Remember to pack travel adapters suitable for your destination.

Out & About

If you're not sure where you're going, ask your Tour / Cruise Manager or hotel / cruise ship reception staff for directions. Make sure you've got your Tour / Cruise manager's mobile number on you. In an emergency you can also call our helpline that's manned 24hrs (01904 521999).

At night avoid poorly lit areas and try to avoid walking back to your hotel / cruise vessel alone. Be aware of what's going on around you and keep away from situations where you're uncomfortable.

When crossing roads, be vigilant at all times. Be aware that in most countries traffic will be coming from the opposite direction than you're used to in the UK and that in some locations traffic isn't required to stop at pedestrian crossings.

Food & Water

Travel offers many opportunities to enjoy different culinary experiences. In addition to good personal hand hygiene, please make sure that 'hot' food is hot and 'cold' food is chilled. Stay hydrated and we advise only drinking bottled water. Stay hydrated and we advise only drinking bottled water and using this too for brushing your teeth.

Take care when eating raw foods such as salads and fruit - make sure you're comfortable that they're fit for consumption.

If you suffer from any allergens let your Tour / Cruise Manager and any catering staff who are serving you know.

Accommodation

Ensure your room is secure by using the locks on doors and windows. Be cautious of wet floors in bathrooms, which can be slippery. Use bathmats and ask the hotel/cruise reception staff if one has not been provided. Don't leave personal electrical appliances left on unattended.

Fire Safety

On arrival at your accommodation - please locate the nearest fire exit(s) to your accommodation and familiarise yourself with the route(s) to the outside / place of safety. Read the fire notices that are displayed in your bedrooms / cabins.

In the unlikely event of a fire occurring - if safe to do so, evacuate your accommodation immediately - don't stop to collect personal belongings. Exit using the staircase (do not use the lift) and go to the assembly / muster point. If you can't leave your accommodation, close all doors, put wet towels or clothes round the door seals and call for help, dial reception if there's a phone.

Returning home

After a wonderful holiday, it is just as important to look after yourself on the way home. Take breaks during long journeys, stretch your legs on flights, and ease back into your routine once you're home.
