The charming Gornergrat Mountain Railway celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2023. Switzerland's original electric rack railway first carried travellers the six miles up the mountain in August 1898. We trace their journey, over valleys and through alpine forests, to an altitude of more than 10,000ft above sea level. The views from the top are jaw-dropping, and on a clear day an astonishing 29 mountaintops are visible, including the best view of the majestic Matterhorn's pyramidal peak. This iconic symbol of Switzerland also provided the inspiration for the design of the Toblerone. Back amongst the low-pitched roofs of Zermatt's timbered chalets, an expert guide reveals that this quintessential alpine resort has several surprising connections to the UK, including the intriguing story of English mountaineer Edward Whymper.

Lack of comms on change to Bernina Express not being First Class. Hotel at St Moritz uses paper cups in room - not very First Class or good for the environment. Change to itinerary - St Moritz to Churwasn't on Glacier Express as per the intinerary and still advertised online as such. No reserved seats on some trains although I had rung to clarify this before booking. guide lacked organisation and was aggressive at times.

We'd originally booked to go on the Classic Glacier Express tour but a few weeks before we were due to go GRJ cancelled it as they hadn't made their minimum number for the tour. We agreed to go on this tour instead as it has a similar itinerary. Seeing Switzerland at this time of year was a delight. Warm enough at lower levels for green pastures, forests and spring flowers, whilst the top of the alps were covered in snow. Our Tour Manager guided us through the trip and really proved her worth when train delays meant a change to plan B and re-routing. It was a long day but she got us there and we had the bonus of seeing Lake Zurich. Well done Judith. The hotels were of a good standard and with the exception of the one night in Strasbourg, were of a decent standard, well equipped and good size. The Tandem in Strasbourg was a very small room, more Premier Inn than First Class. When things went as per itinerary the reserved seating in First Class carriages was very comfortable. Sadly there were many deviations from the itinerary e,g, Second Class on the Bernina Express, not doing the whole route on the Glacier Express, Seats not always reserved. Also the timings of the trains was often less than customer friendly, late starts sometimes meant late arrivals at hotels, with no time to freshen up before a late dinner. Arrival time in Strasbourg meant about an hour to explore before a pre booked dinner, we left Zermatt at lunchtime. So we regularly felt cheated that the booking arrangements fell short of the perceptions given in the original itinerary/sales blurb. The huge plus of this trip was the group of 25 people. Great characters, lots of fun and laughs, took the changes in their strides and helped each other when there was a need. Overall left with mixed feelings about this trip and not sure if I trust GRJ to deliver another trip as per expectations. They have sent an e-mail to the whole group saying that they are investigating the shortfalls and will be in touch. So the outcome of that may well influence any future travels with GRJ. Some tips for this or similar trips: - Pack light, sometimes the luggage racks are full and you need to heft your case into the rack above your seat - Take a flask, travel kettle, coffee. Coffee on the train can be between 5-7SF and on some there is no buffet car. So this will save a fair bit and mean you have coffee when the buffet car is closed due to staff shotages etc. - For similar reasons, most places have a Coop or Migos, great value for anything you want to eat on the train. - Don't waste money on bottled water in Switzerland. The tap water is high quality. - You'll have cobbled streets to content with if you want to get the most from the trip. Good walking shoes advisable, plus pull over crampons as some of the higher altitude paths were still ice and snow.
