Valleys and Railways of Mid Wales

Our Welsh adventure starts in Llandrindod Wells at the Metropole Hotel and Spa. You can check in anytime from 2pm and then you're at leisure to start exploring before dinner tonight. You could get acquainted with Llandrindod Wells with a stroll around the town which is surrounded by breathtaking countryside and is famous for its Victorian architecture.

This morning we board the steam-hauled Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway to Tywyn. Tucked away in the wildflower meadows of southern Snowdonia, the beautiful Talyllyn Railway paints a cheerful red trail over the bridges and through the forests of North Wales. Originally opened in 1865, the seven-mile journey takes us past waterfalls, streams and the delightful Merioneth mountains.

With some time at leisure when we arrive in Tywyn, you can soak up the town's coastal charm. Visit the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum and see the fascinating artefacts on display, from complete locomotives to smaller pieces like signalling equipment and tickets. Or, you could simply stroll along the famous, picturesque beach, listening to the soothing sounds of waves and taking in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Our coach then takes us down the road to the thriving resort of Aberdovey where you can explore at your own pace. This picturesque village has a sandy beach that stretches along Cardigan Bay and is framed by the rolling hills of Snowdonia National Park. If you wander through the quaint streets, you'll discover colourful cottages, traditional shops, and friendly locals that all create a delightful atmosphere.

We drive back to our hotel later this afternoon through the verdant rolling hills of the enchanting Welsh countryside.

After breakfast, we board our coach and head into Elan Valley where a local ranger joins us for a guided tour. The area is known as the 'Welsh Lake District' and is made up of several man-made lakes connected by six dams. The most impressive, Craig Goch, is built in the Birmingham Baroque style, with elegantly curved walls and a series of narrow arches.

Our coach tour ends at Devil's Bridge, a remarkable stone bridge over the River Marteg. Dating back to the 18th century, the bridge's unique design attracts thousands of visitors who marvel at its beauty and the legends surrounding its name. Here, we join the steam-hauled Vale of Rheidol Railway for a scenic journey through the Welsh valleys to Aberystwyth.

Through 70 miles of captivating Welsh landscapes, the steam-powered train carries us on vintage carriages by lush valleys, cascading waterfalls, and rugged mountains. When we arrive in Aberystwyth, we head to its esteemed university. Well-known as the school where King Charles studied Welsh, this is the perfect place to gain an insight into Welsh heritage, with an 'Introduction to Welsh Language' lesson.

After some time at leisure to explore the stunning beaches, charming architecture, and vibrant cultural scene of Aberystwyth, we head back to our hotel by coach.

Today we discover the medieval Powis Castle and its attractive formal gardens. The castle dates back to the 13th century and its gardens are a paradise steeped in history, still proudly displaying ancient statues and beautiful orangery on the terraces. For centuries, talented artists have added to the castle's collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, and tapestries that you can discover as you explore.

Afterwards, our coach drives to nearby Welshpool, where we board the steam-hauled Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. The route is one of the British Isles' most historic rail journeys, through the wild countryside - a canvas of deep forests and impressive mountains.

Back at our hotel this evening, we're accompanied by a talented Welsh choir who entertain us with wonderful performances during dinner.

**Please Note: For departures 30/09/2024 & 14/10/2024, we shall be taking a journey up to the spectacularly beautiful town of Llangollen, for a trip on a horse drawn canal boat and have Welsh cream tea.

Our holiday comes to an end after breakfast this morning. After saying goodbye to new friends, you can head home or, if you're not ready to leave Wales yet, you could continue exploring on your own.
