The ICE train

Probably one of Europe's finest high speed trains, the jewel in German Rail's crown is the InterCityExpress or ICE.

Linking all Germany's major cities and selected destinations outside Germany, the ICE trains offer some of the most comfortable and well-designed accommodation around, so you can really get the most out of your journey. All trains either have a BordBistro car serving light refreshments or a BordRestaurant serving full meals, and on some services a selection of dishes can also be served at your seat.

Several sections of new purpose-built track have been built in recent years, allowing the latest generation of ICE trains to hit their maximum speed of up to 186mph (300km/h) and cutting journey times dramatically.

Slovenia, Croatia & Montenegro: The Adriatic Coast

“We selected this holiday to enable us to visit some places we have always wanted to go to and we were not disappointed. The highlights being Lake Bled, the Plitvice Lakes and the Postojna Caves all of which were amazing, but our visits to Ljubljana, Hvar, Dubrovnik and Montenegro were equally as good. The hotels were of a very good standard and in most cases in good locations which made getting about in our free time very easy. The travel arrangements were at times a little challenging on the German Trains which were not very reliable but our Tour Manager did a very good job in sorting things out and getting us to Munich at the end of our first day although it was rather later than expected but there was a hot meal waiting for us which was very welcome. Overall the holiday was excellent made all the more enjoyable by a good group of travellers which we think makes all the difference.

“It is a very interesting historical part of Germany to visit, which hour planned visit made the most of. The friendliness of the group was encouraged by the relaxed manner of the tour leader and his ability to be concerned with individuals interests. He dealt excellently with the sudden rail and boat cancellations which occurred, some due to the weather conditions, keeping us informed, even making them seem fun and organising alternative arrangements. A very enjoyable railway holiday.

“A very interesting and lovely holiday except for the tiring travel on the the way there and on return home spoiled by long travel hours through the European Football and the floods in Zurich. This was through no fault of Great Rail Journeys. Our Tour Guide Rick Jones was very good considering the problems encountered. Barbara & Martin WILLACY.
