TGV Trains

Introduced in 1981, France's TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) was the original European high-speed train. Linking Paris with Lyon, the new service revolutionised train travel and meant that travelling by air over medium and short distances was no longer seen as the best option, even for business travel.

The network has expanded rapidly and today these sleek, stylish trains offer links to over 60 destinations throughout France. Operated by SNCF, the French national rail operator, TGV trains travel over specially-constructed high speed lines. The trains can achieve speeds of up to 186mph (300km/h) on most long distance routes and 200mph (320km/h) on the new TGV Est line, which links Paris with Strasbourg, Luxembourg and Basel. With the exception of shorter journeys, TGVs almost always have an on-board buffet car, serving a selection of drinks and light refreshments.

“The tour was interesting and varied. The places visited had good local guides to show us around and we had sufficient free time to enjoy the places further. The Hotel was extremely comfortable and ideally located for access to the Citadel of Carcassonne. Our tour manager, Paul Robson, was excellent and ensured our enjoyment and safety throughout our stay. My only complaint was that he was given my late husbands contact details to enable him to provide additional information on the trip. I did not realise this until I had returned home and found the messages on my husband's phone. This meant that I missed details that were important. Obviously John's details were not included on my booking form but must be held on your database somehow. Please ensure this cannot happen again as it caused me distress and could have disrupted my tour.

“From start to finish the trip was well planned. The administration was comprehensive and helpful. The tour guide contacted each traveller before the journey commenced and provided lots of additional itinerary information and advice. The hotels were good and the itinerary did not disappoint. There were a couple of free days but with optional choices for those seeking more trips. The company app was very useful: it had weather information, currency conversions, hotel locations and much more. The other travellers were great fun and we had a wonderful time. The scenery was amazing and the trip was an absolute pleasure, which we recommend highly to others.
